Built the right way, base up
Most patio failures on Long Island come from bad base prep, not bad pavers. We excavate to proper depth, install compacted RCA base in lifts, screed a bedding layer of concrete sand, and finish with polymeric sand joints. Pitched away from the house at the correct fall, so water drains where it should — not into your basement.

Brick patios and clay-paver options
A true brick patio uses full-depth clay pavers rather than concrete units, and the color runs all the way through, so it never fades to a washed-out gray. Clay holds its red, charcoal, and buff tones for decades and suits Colonial, Tudor, and older Long Island homes where concrete pavers can look out of place. We lay brick patios in running bond, herringbone, and basketweave patterns, with soldier-course or Belgian-block borders to lock the field in place. Masonry patio drainage on Long Island soil
Drainage is the single biggest reason a masonry patio fails here. Long Island's sandy loam drains well in some yards and sits on clay or a high water table in others, and freeze-thaw cycles lift any patio that holds water. Every patio we build is pitched a minimum 1/8 inch per foot away from the house, set on 6 to 12 inches of compacted RCA base placed in lifts, and detailed with a bedding course that lets water pass rather than pond. Where the grade works against us, we add channel drains along the house line, pipe gutter downspouts under the patio to daylight or a dry well, and use permeable joint material so surface water goes down instead of across. On mortared bluestone and brick-on-slab patios we pitch the concrete slab itself and weep the perimeter, because a sealed masonry surface with no escape path is what cracks first.
What brick patio installation actually involves
Brick patio installation is a sequence, and skipping any step is what you pay for five winters later. We mark utilities, excavate 8 to 12 inches depending on soil, compact RCA base in 3-inch lifts with a plate compactor, screed a 1-inch concrete-sand bedding course, then lay the brick tight to a string line in your chosen pattern. Edges get a soldier course set in concrete or a hidden paver restraint, the field is cut with a wet saw for clean borders around steps, pool coping, and A/C pads, and the whole patio is compacted again before polymeric sand is swept in, watered, and set. Most brick and paver patio installations in Nassau and Suffolk take 4 to 8 working days, and the same crew is on your property start to finish.
